A man armed with a sword and an ax were detained this Thursday by security personnel at the building of the American newspaper The New York Times after he requested to speak with several journalists.

A spokesman for the New York Police Force explained in statements collected by NBC that the person wanted to enter the newsroom of the famous newspaper, located in Manhattan, to speak with unidentified people from the newspaper.

After being detained by the building's security personnel, the man handed in his weapons without incident and was held until the arrival of the Police. Later, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Victims of continued violence

The incident takes place at a time when journalists in the United States have become increasingly the targets of violence in recent years.

On the day of the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, several journalists were attacked while working. And, most recently, a Las Vegas city elected official has been accused of allegedly stabbing a journalist to death after she wrote critical articles against him, The Hill has reported.
