A legislative initiative presented in Texas, United States, where abortion is practically prohibited, seeks that the fetus is considered as one more passenger to allow pregnant women to drive through the lane for buses and shared cars.
The US media explained this Thursday that the legislative proposal was introduced after earlier this year a pregnant woman alleged that the anti-abortion laws in force in Texas mean that she has the right to drive in that lane given that a fetus is a person, after receiving a fine for driving on this type of road.
The legislative project, called law 521 and presented before the state Lower House, would allow any pregnant woman to use the lane.
If approved, the bill would give legal status to the term "fetal personality," that is, the idea that the fetus enjoys the same legal rights as a human being.
Ever since the United States Supreme Court struck down the 1973 "Roe v. Wade" ruling, thereby eliminating federal abortion protections, consideration of the fetus as a person has been at the center of the reproductive rights debate in the United States.
