Kyiv Mayor Calls on West to Send Blankets Amid Putin's Attacks on Power Plants
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, has asked Western countries to send blankets to Ukraine, given the attacks that the Russians are perpetrating on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and before the arrival of winter.
The former world heavyweight champion has given an interview to the Telegraph, in which he has warned that there are numerous attacks on power plants and that the capital's electricity network is operating in 'emergency mode'.
Although Klitschko bought some generators and has 1,000 mobile heating points in Kyiv, organized with the help of his team, his fears continue to grow as the weather turns colder and the Russians continue to attack key infrastructure.
"Due to a major electricity shortage, 20% to 50%, the city's power supply system is operating in emergency mode," Klitschko said on Telegram.
"We are doing everything to save the lives of our people and protect them. But this winter will definitely be a big challenge for us," the Kyiv mayor said. Without blankets, he said, people in the camp would freeze to death.
Electricity is currently one of the only methods Ukrainians have to heat their homes, as many live in war-torn buildings that have no gas and no windows.
