Biden warns that Russia would make an "incredibly serious mistake" if it used nuclear weapons

US President Joe Biden considered on Tuesday that Russia would make "an incredibly serious mistake" if it decides to resort to tactical nuclear weapons in its war against Ukraine. "Russia would make an incredibly serious mistake if it used tactical nuclear weapons," he told reporters.

The Russian government has denounced the possibility of Ukraine using a dirty bomb on its own territory to blame Russia for using weapons of mass destruction and provoke a harsh response from the West, an accusation that Kyiv has rejected and that Paris, Washington, and London see as a "pretext for a Russian military escalation".

When asked about this possibility, the Democratic president indicated that he could not guarantee that it could be a covert operation designed to appear as carried out by another. "I do not guarantee that it is a false flag operation, not yet, but it would be a serious mistake," he concluded, reports Efe.

For its part, the Pentagon also indicated that if Russia were to deploy a dirty bomb or other nuclear weapons in Ukraine "there would be consequences," Defense Department spokesman Pat Ryder said.

Those consequences would have been communicated to Russia on "a variety of levels," Ryder detailed, adding that for the Pentagon the accusations that Ukraine is preparing a dirty bomb "are obviously false," reports Europa Press.

In addition, he announced that the US Department of Defense maintains "sophisticated technical means" to detect nuclear or radiological detonations of any kind. "It's something we take very seriously and continue to monitor 24/7," he said.

Also known as a radiological weapon, the dirty bomb is a conventional explosive, such as dynamite, enriched with radioactive material that spreads when it explodes, following a doctrine of use similar to that of chemical weapons. Despite containing radioactive elements, dirty bombs are not atomic weapons.
