Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday thanked Germany for the help of military means such as the IRIS-T air defense system but asked for more artillery weapons, armored vehicles, and other weapons to deal with Russian troops.

This was stated by Zelenski to the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is visiting Kyiv, during a meeting held this Tuesday afternoon, according to Ukrainian government sources. This is Steinmeier's first visit to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24.

After highlighting the effectiveness that the air defense system provided by Germany is showing, the Ukrainian president expressed his hope of having other priority defense material for the protection of the Ukrainians and the liberation of the territory such as "artillery systems, armored vehicles, and other weapons."

In the meeting, in addition to security aid, Zelenski and Steinmeier discussed other issues of economic, energy, humanitarian and social development cooperation, according to the Ukrainian president's website.

"I am grateful to Germany for giving a clear signal to the political and business world that the reconstruction of Ukraine and the investments in our country are the reconstruction and development of a future member of the European Union," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president also thanked Germany and the international community for supporting grain exports. "About 9 million tons have already been exported, and this means that tens of millions of people around the world in various countries have been saved from the threat of famine caused by the Russian Federation," he said.

Holomodor reconnaissance

Zelensky also asked the German president for the Bundestag to recognize the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people, due to the importance of doing so at this time.

The Holomodor (death by starvation) is the name with which Ukraine calls the Ukrainian genocide or Holocaust that between 1932 and 1933 supposed the death of some four million people, mostly peasants, due to the forced collectivization imposed by Stalin and the authorities of the Soviet Union.

In addition to modern IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine, Steinmeier promised Zelenski that "the Mars II and Panzerhaubitze 2000 systems will soon be delivered to Ukraine," according to statements attributed to the German president published by the Ukrainian government.

"Many people want an end to the war, a truce. But, as the president said, Ukraine wants to achieve a just peace. I share this opinion: there will be no true peace without justice, and an unjust peace can only cause a new war.", said the Federal President of Germany after the meeting.
