An earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale shook Hualien County in eastern Taiwan on Monday, with no casualties reported so far.

According to the island's Central Bureau of Meteorology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.8 kilometers at 09:05 local time (01:05 GMT) and had its epicenter in the Guangfu municipality.

The meteorological office reported that the tremor was felt in "almost the entire island of Taiwan" while urging residents in the area near the epicenter to exercise caution and to drop, cover, and take shelter in a stable place in case of stronger earthquakes.

Witnesses quoted by Taiwanese media say the ground shook "intensely for almost two minutes" in the island's capital, Taipei, located more than 150 kilometers from the epicenter.

So far, no material damage or casualties from the earthquake have been reported.

The tremor was felt even across the Taiwan Strait in southeastern China's Fujian province, local media reported.

Taiwan sits at the confluence of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, so earthquakes are frequent on the island, especially on its east coast.
