A total of ten bodies were discovered this week in five clandestine graves, in a rural area of the western Mexican state of Michoacán, near the border with Jalisco.
The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) reported that the graves were found in the town of Los Negritos, in the municipality of Villamar, where the search for more clandestine burials continues tonight.
The discovery of the graves was last Saturday, through an FGE operation in which specialized dogs, Civil Protection rescuers, and state police participated.
Michoacán accumulates a total of 1,300 violent homicides so far this year
In the first excavations, the authorities exhumed the bodies of four women and two men, all unidentified and in an advanced state of decomposition.
On this Sunday, the FGE exhumed the bodies of three men and one woman, in the same conditions as the first six.
The bodies were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO), where authorities will seek to determine the cause of death, although at the moment it is presumed that the victims were tortured and killed by suffocation or bullet wounds.
Drug cartels
Villamar is a municipality located in the western part of Michoacán, just 70 kilometers from the neighboring state of Jalisco.
The Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM) and Los Caballeros Templarios cartels operate in the region, which fight to control the production and trafficking of drugs, such as marijuana and methamphetamine. .
The Mexican Army and the National Guard have reinforced their presence in Michoacán, with the deployment of more than 4,000 troops in recent months.
So far this year, Michoacán has accumulated a total of 1,300 violent homicides, most of them related to organized crime.
