Putin presents the 'White Swan', the world's largest supersonic bomber

Russia has released images of the first flight of the Tupolev Tu-160M, also known as the 'White Swan', the largest supersonic aircraft in the history of military aviation and the world's heaviest combat aircraft capable of carrying cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.

It is a new modernized version of the Soviet-era Tu-160, with new engines and electronic control systems, with the ability to launch nuclear weapons attacks 2,000 kilometers away from its base.

It is capable of flying at more than 2,000 kilometers/hour, measures 54 meters in length and its wingspan exceeds 55 meters. "Another Tu-160M strategic missile bomber developed by the Tupolev company has made its maiden return," the Russian air corporation UAC reported.

During the inaugural flight, different maneuvers were carried out to check the stability and operability of the aircraft, which was loaded with Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, one of Russia's most modern strategic weapons. These missiles are also known as 'daggers' and can reach up to ten times the speed of sound.

Known as Blackjack according to NATO nomenclature, the upgraded version of the Tupolev 160 is a boost for the Russian air force, which plans to deploy 50 of these planes to replace the original ones.

The Tu-160M is combat-ready, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, and could be used in the massive bombing raids that Moscow has been launching against Ukraine's critical infrastructure since late summer.
