The Secretary of Defense of the United States calls Robles: "I thank Spain for its exemplary support for Ukraine"

The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, spoke this Friday with his Spanish counterpart, Minister Margarita Robles, with whom he reaffirmed his "strong" bilateral relations between the US and Spain on this matter, especially when it comes to "coordinate urgent security assistance for Ukraine," Austin said.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Austin thanked Robles for "the exemplary humanitarian and security support" that Spain is providing Ukraine in the war.

As can be read in the said message published this Saturday, it was the US Secretary of Defense who called the Spanish Minister Margarita Robles to "affirm the strong bilateral defense relationship and to coordinate the urgent need for security assistance to Ukraine, including air defense systems," explained Austin.

For the Joe Biden government, "Spain is a staunch NATO ally that hosts permanent US forces, contributes to NATO's deterrence and defense efforts, and provides much-needed humanitarian and security assistance to Ukraine."

In this conversation between Austin and Robles, both leaders have expressed "their continued solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they resist Russian aggression and defend their democracy."

Likewise, the US Secretary of Defense praised "Spain's focus on securing NATO's southern flank" and underlined "the importance of stability in the Sahel and West Africa," the statement said.

For this reason, they add, both Austin and Robles have agreed to "continue close coordination on these and other important issues," the note concludes.
