- The Russian president would organize another massive mobilization to try to regain the initiative in Ukraine.
Putin, increasingly cornered, plans to impose martial law in January in Moscow
Vladimir Putin is increasingly desperate and cornered by the results of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and as soon as the end of the year passes, he could make drastic new decisions.
As reported by the Daily Mail, the Russian president plans to impose martial law in many Russian cities, including Moscow, in addition to mobilizing more citizens to send them as troops to Ukraine.
Valery Solovey, a former professor at the prestigious Moscow Institute of International Relations, believes that "with a high degree of probability, the second stage of the mobilization will be announced after the New Year."
According to this expert, martial law will also be more widely imposed than in the areas of Ukraine annexed by Putin where it is currently applied. Solovey stated that a "second wave of mobilization can be imposed simultaneously with the declaration of martial law in Moscow, that is, the second half of January or February."
When this happens, the borders will be closed to those who oppose the mobilization "including women who fall into this category," Solovey said, to prevent citizens from fleeing Russia.
Putin believes that through massive recruitment, the Russians will see it as a "people's war," an idea put forward by former Prime Minister Sergei Kiriyenko, 60, his deputy chief of staff, who is seen as a candidate to occupy the Kremlin in the future.
The Russian president has already recruited 360,000 people, in addition to his million-strong regular army, but the results remain poor for Russia.
