Japan asks the population to seek refuge after North Korea launches a new missile, which was followed by two more
North Korea launched a medium-range ballistic missile and two short-range projectiles into the Sea of Japan early Thursday morning, triggering air alerts in several prefectures in the north of the Japanese island of Honshu, according to Japanese authorities.
The Japanese Defense Ministry said that North Korea launched a first medium-range missile around 7:42 local time that fell into the Sea of Japan, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
At first, the defense portfolio announced that the projectile had flown over the Japanese archipelago, but later corrected itself, assuring that in the end, it had not been so.
However, after the launch of the missile, the Government sent instant alerts asking the population to seek refuge in the prefectures of Miyagi, Yamagata, and Niigata, all in the north of Honshu, the main island of the Japanese archipelago.
Later, two other short-range missiles were detected by the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, which detailed that they had been fired at 8:39 a.m. (00:39 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) from the North Korean town of Kaechon, south of Pyongyang.
These launches take place a day after North Korea launched almost twenty missiles into the Sea of Japan, one of which flew over the maritime demarcation line between the two Koreas for the first time since the war between the two countries, blowing up anti-aircraft sirens on one of the South Korean islands.
In this context, on October 4 Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile that fell into the Pacific Ocean and, this time, did fly over Japanese territory, an event that had not happened since 2017 and that also activated the alert in Japan.
The offensive by Pyongyang further escalates tensions in the region, after North Korea launched dozens of ballistic missiles in recent weeks in tests prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions, in response to military maneuvers. US-Koreans that it considers an invasion rehearsal.
The United States, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), have shared evidence that North Korea is "likely" to carry out a nuclear missile test, the first since 2017.
