Democrats will maintain control of the US Senate thanks to their victory in Nevada

The Democrats will maintain control of the Senate after Catherine Cortez Masto was declared the winner in Nevada this Saturday, against Republican Adam Laxalt, so the second round on December 6 in Georgia will only decide if the Democratic party widens its advantage. , once his majority is secured.

The scrutiny of the state of Nevada has ended after several days in which the recount of the vote by mail has been carried out, which has ended up favoring Cortez Masto and granting him victory, after gathering 48% of the votes, according to Politico.

On the other hand, the victory of the party of the US president, Joe Biden, has not been complete in the state of Nevada, since the Republican candidate Joe Lombardo took over the governorship after unseating Democrat Steve Sisolak.

Masto's victory follows that of Mark Kelly, who won the seat after a long contest in the state of Arizona, which left the Democratic party just one seat away from maintaining control of the upper house, an advantage that has been confirmed this Saturday with the victory in Nevada.

However, in Arizona, the dispute between the two gubernatorial candidates, Republican Kari Lake and Democrat Katie Hobbs have not yet been closed.

The leader of the Democratic parliamentary group in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, has celebrated this result and has promised to act as a firewall against the Republican threat that sought to "ban abortion throughout the country", after relating the commitment of citizens to his formation with the strong defense of the right to decide of women that his party has carried out.

"The American people rejected the undemocratic, authoritarian, unpleasant, and divisive direction that the Republicans wanted to take in our country," he celebrated on his Twitter profile.

"I hope to continue working to achieve significant results for the American people," he wrote minutes before receiving express congratulations from the US president for the result of the legislative elections, who attributed the victory to "the quality of his candidates."

Biden has assured that he is now focused on what the result of Georgia will be, where the last Senate seat remains to be assigned in the second round to be held in December. "51 is always better," the president pointed out, referring to the seat at stake that, if he joined his bench, would not make the votes depend on the double vote of the presidency of the Upper House.

After the results of this Saturday, it remains to be decided which party will obtain the majority of the seats in the Lower House, while the ballot count progresses in different states of the country.

Currently, US media projections indicate that the Republicans have 211 seats out of the 218 needed to have a majority in the House of Representatives, while the Democratic Party is given 204 seats.
