Biden says it is "unlikely" that the missile that hit Poland, causing two deaths, is fired from Russia

US President Joe Biden said Wednesday that it is "unlikely" that the missile that caused an explosion this Tuesday in Poland, near the border with Ukraine, was fired from Russia, causing two deaths, and announced that the G-7 and NATO will support the Polish government's investigation into the incident before taking "further steps."

Asked by the press about whether the missile was fired from Russia, Biden said: "There is a lot of information that contradicts that. I don't want to say until we fully investigate, but it is unlikely due to the trajectory that it was fired from Russia."

The US president made the remarks at the end of a meeting of the G-7 and NATO leaders on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, which is being held on the Indonesian island of Bali.

At that meeting, the leaders agreed "unanimously" to support Poland's investigation to determine "exactly what happened" before collectively taking "further steps," the president said.

"Brutal" and "inhumane" attacks

During the meeting, according to Biden, the leaders of the G-7 and NATO also addressed the "brutal" and "inhumane" attacks launched by Russia in recent hours against different regions of Ukraine, including the capital, Kyiv, and which have caused Major power outages.

"At a time when the world has come together at the G-20 summit to urge de-escalation, Russia continues to choose to escalate [the war] in Ukraine. There were debris and missile remnants in western Ukraine. We stand with Ukraine right now and we will do whatever it takes for them to defend themselves," Biden stressed.

The meeting of the leaders of the G-7 and NATO took place at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Bali where Biden is staying. In addition to the American, the meeting was attended by the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz; the Prime Ministers of Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, Justin Trudeau, Rishi Sunak, Giorgia Meloni and Kishida Fumio, respectively; and the French president, Emmanuel Macron; member countries of the G-7.

Also participating are the leaders of Spain and the Netherlands, Pedro Sánchez and Mark Rutte, NATO countries also present at the G-20 summit as guests of this forum, as well as the president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen. , and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, informed the White House.

NATO emergency meeting

In consultations on the incident in Poland, the next step is an emergency NATO meeting to be held this Wednesday in Brussels at the request of the Polish government.

Poland is considering invoking NATO Article 4, according to which the Allies "shall consult each other when, in the judgment of either of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened."

The Government of Poland attributed this Wednesday to a "Russian-made missile" the explosion registered on Tuesday in the east of the country near the border with Ukraine that caused two deaths and summoned the Russian ambassador in Warsaw.
