Carlos III debuts in his new role: the monarch entrusts Sunak with the formation of his first British Government
Conservative Rishi Sunak will be the first British leader commissioned by King Charles III to form a new government. The monarch will do so this Tuesday, on his 48th day of reign, after ascending to the throne on September 8, as successor to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
In this way, the newly appointed leader of the Conservative Party will be the first premier to start his term under the reign of Carlos III. And it is that Sunak will replace Liz Truss as the head of the Executive this Tuesday, after she was forced to resign on October 20 due to the turmoil that the tax cuts of her program caused in the financial markets.
Truss was the last prime minister of the reign of Elizabeth II, replacing Boris Johnson on September 6, just two days before the death of the then-head of state. Due to her delicate state of health, Elizabeth II then asked Truss to form an Executive at the Scottish castle of Balmoral.
Although the new king has already held meetings with Truss as head of state, this will be the first time he has commissioned a new British leader to form a government. He will do so this Tuesday in an audience at London's Buckingham Palace.
Carlos III will debut his protocol role in the formation of a new British Government long before his mother. Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952, when Winston Churchill had been at 10 Downing Street for a year. It was not until 1955 when Churchill was replaced by the also conservative Anthony Eden, in which he was the first Executive commissioned by the late monarch.
Resignation and a 'real' commission
Being a protocol act, everything is already organized for the formation of the new Executive. The still prime minister started her last cabinet meeting at around 09:00 local time (08:00 GMT), before making a statement to the country at the door of the residence at number 10 Downing Street and later going to present her resignation to Carlos III at Buckingham Palace.
After this meeting, it will be Sunak's turn to go to the palace for his audience with the monarch, after which he will go to Downing Street to make a speech to the nation at noon and then begin to appoint the ministers who will form his Executive. The former Minister of Economy assumes power in the midst of an economic crisis, due to the increase in inflation and interest rates and an imminent recession.
