A series of earthquakes, the last of them registered this Monday with a magnitude of 5.9 degrees according to local authorities, has hit the island of Taiwan in recent days causing at least one death and 79 injuries.
According to the island's Central Bureau of Meteorology, the earthquake occurred in Hualien County (east) at 10:07 local time (02:07 GMT) on Monday at a depth of 13.4 kilometers and can be considered a replica of the one that occurred on Sunday. of magnitude 6.8.
These earthquakes have caused personal and material damage on the island, leaving around 400 people trapped on Mount Liushishi due to landslides and rocks that have cut off roads.
A total of three bridges in Hualien counties collapsed or suffered structural damage in various sections, local news agency CNA reported.
The quake also caused transportation disruptions in eastern Taiwan, where six train cars derailed at Dongli station, causing no injuries but temporarily suspending services on the Hualien-Taitung line.
More than 7,000 households in Yuli township were left without power, and neighborhoods in different cities, including the capital Taipei, suffered blackouts as a result of the earthquake.
Taiwan sits at the confluence of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, so earthquakes are frequent on the island.
