The war in Ukraine, fueled by the Russian invasion of this country, is approaching its seventh month without significant progress being made in either direction, neither on the Russian offensive nor on the Ukrainian defensive.

The logistical problems for Russia are becoming more acute and proof of this is that given the shortage of troops, they are beginning to recruit indigent and homeless people to send them to the Ukrainian front.

Until now, Vladimir Putin has refused to declare a full general mobilization for fear that an unpopular policy could backfire at home.

With its regular army greatly reduced, there is mounting evidence that the Kremlin regime has launched its latest recruitment plan, this time targeting the most vulnerable.

Nochlezhka, the country's oldest charity providing assistance to the homeless, said military officials have been visiting shelters in the Frunzensky district of St. Petersburg.

"A recruiter offered to hand out leaflets explaining that men should be called to serve, with a contract," an unnamed Nochlezhka source told the Rotunda news service.

"The officer on duty at the shelter did not allow the leaflets to be distributed," the source added.

For her part, the charity's spokeswoman, Tatyana Bazhenova, said Nochlezhka cannot help facilitate the military recruitment of people using its shelters.

"We have always been outside of religion and politics, so we cannot help in this matter," he told the Bumaga news channel, The Sun newspaper collects.
