Doctors and nurses at a hospital in Mexico performed a cesarean section on a 19-year-old girl using mobile flashlights. A performance that ended with the newborn with part of a mutilated ear, according to Reforma.
The 8-day-old baby is in critical condition after doctors cut off part of his ear and hemangioma in the same area. The family fears that he may lose hearing in that ear.
The child's grandmother, tells the media, how the surgeon who intervened in the cesarean section evaded his responsibility, claiming that he had nothing to do with the ear incident and left the operating room before they finished sewing.
Meanwhile, another doctor, different from the one who attended the birth, offered to try to rebuild the baby's ear without success, since this intervention meant an increase of thirty thousand pesos (1,396.41 euros) in the cost of the intervention.
No delivery
Karla Araceli's cesarean section was scheduled for June 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the private hospital Clínica Internacional de Especialidades in Mexicali, however, the clinic suffered a blackout for 26 minutes and the doctors delayed the intervention until 12 p.m.:40 hours when the woman was anesthetized. The delivery surgeon told the woman that even though the power had gone out, they would go ahead with the C-section because she was already anesthetized.
The woman insisted on postponing the delivery, “I don't want to operate like this, I don't want to die”, but the doctor ignored it and continued the operation, using flashlights from his mobile. When the baby's father asked about the situation, the doctor assured him that they had a power substation in the operating room.
By cutting the left ear, they cut off part of a hemangioma, which is a benign vascular tumor, which usually disappears spontaneously and therefore it does not represent danger. Although in some cases it is a health risk since they can cause bleeding problems, breathing difficulties, or growth disturbances. In addition to this situation, the mother denounces that, after giving birth, they did not let her see her son.
Given this situation, the family has filed a complaint about the crimes of medical and technical responsibility.
