The shooting took place at approximately 6:00 p.m. (local time) at a "non-permitted event" in connection with 'Moechella', which is described as a "defense festival that amplifies the culture of Washington DC", according to police sources.
"We have to make sure that individuals are held accountable for their actions," Contee stressed.
"When there are large concentrations, it only takes one person with a firearm to turn this into a dangerous scene," added the police chief.
Police officers confiscated several illegal firearms earlier in the evening and the firearm with which the officer was shot has not been recovered.
For her part, the mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, has called for those responsible to be held accountable. "We have a child who has been killed in an event that was not properly planned, with people with weapons involved," Bowser said. "Even with the Police managing the crowds in the place, someone has used a weapon, and now a child has died," the mayor denounced, adding that there needs to be more responsibility on the part of the authorities.
