Zelensky affirms that the threats created by Putin could surpass the Chornobyl tragedy
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said Wednesday that Russia has created threats this year that could exceed even the 1986 tragedy at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
"36 years ago, the liquidators of the consequences of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant protected not only Ukraine but the whole world, the future of all of us. Today our defenders again protect our future. This year, Russia has created new threats that could surpass even that horrible accident," he wrote.
In a message on Telegram, collected by the Unian agency, he assured that Ukraine will never forget the "feat" of the liquidators and will not allow anyone to ignore the price that the country and the world paid for the liquidation of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident.
On March 4, Russian troops seized the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and the satellite city of Enerhodar. Since then, Moscow has refused to create a demilitarized zone around the plant, which is regularly bombed by Russian forces.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission that visited the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in early September stressed in a report the "immediate need for interim measures" to prevent an accident at the plant.
On October 23, the G7 countries urged Russia to immediately return full control of the nuclear power plant to Ukraine and to withdraw its personnel and troops from there.
