The House of Representatives points out that Trump "provoked violence" in the assault on the Capitol: "It would not have happened without him"
An 800-page report by House investigators will conclude that Donald Trump criminally planned to overturn his 2020 election loss by "provoking supporters to violence" on Capitol Hill with false claims of widespread voter fraud.
The storming of the Capitol, which took place on January 6, 2021, by Trump supporters, threatened American democracy and "put lawmakers' lives at risk," according to a 154-page summary of the report released Monday. picked up by The Guardian.
The congressional committee investigating the event points to "a man, former President Donald Trump, who was followed by many others" as the "central cause" of the assault and assures that "none of the events of January 6 would have happened without him."
A Trump conspiracy
The eight chapters of the report reflect all of Trump's extraordinary campaign to overturn his 2020 election loss and the pressure to change the vote on state officials, the justice department, members of Congress, and the vice president.
The summary details how Trump spread false claims on social media and in public appearances, encouraging his supporters to travel to Washington and protest Joe Biden's election victory. Also, addressing how the former President of the United States urged his supporters to "fight like hell" at a huge rally outside the White House on the morning of January 6, 2021.
Another detail mentioned in the 154-page summary is that Trump did nothing to stop the violence when his supporters attacked the police and stormed the Capitol. "A multi-part conspiracy," the committee concludes.
Tax secrets
This report is made public as Trump is running for president again and is facing multiple federal investigations, including the classified documents present at his Florida estate.
In the coming days, in addition, another House committee will publish his tax returns, something that Trump has tried to keep private in recent years. Democrats had impeached Trump twice before, but both times he was acquitted by the Senate. Richard Neal, the committee's chairman, and a Democrat said the documents will be released in a few days after the sensitive material has been redacted.
It is not clear if this report will shed light on possible conflicts between Trump's real estate holdings and his actions as president, or how much taxes he paid while in office, according to El Español.
Reckoning
The January 6 investigation has been more personal for lawmakers since most of them were present on the day of the assault on the Capitol. "This committee is nearing the end of its job, but as a country, we remain in strange and uncharted waters," said the panel's chairman, Democrat Bennie Thompson of Mississippi.
"We have never had a president of the United States provoke a violent attempt to block the transfer of power. I think that almost two years later, this is still a moment of reflection and reckoning," he added at a meeting on Monday.
