Brussels accepts Amazon's changes in the use of data from its sellers

The European Commission gives the go-ahead to the changes offered by Amazon to not use the non-public data of sellers who sell through its platform, thus avoiding penalties for unfair competition.

These commitments will be legal as of June 2023, since the technology giant has a period of six months to put all the agreements into practice. Specifically, Amazon will stop using revenue data, shipping data, inventory-related information, and consumer visit data.

This is a measure that will cover both automated e-commerce tools and employees who use the information to make decisions.

With respect to the Amazon Buy Box service, which highlights a seller's offer and allows one-click shopping, the company agrees to treat all sellers fairly when making offers to consumers and to show a second offer if there is an advantage in terms of price or delivery.

In this case, both offers will show the same descriptive information and will have the same shopping experience to improve consumer habits.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime will establish non-discriminatory criteria for the qualification of sellers and offers, likewise, sellers will be allowed to freely choose the carriers for their deliveries.

Amazon's opinion

An e-commerce spokesperson told that "we are pleased to have responded to the concerns of the European Commission and to have been able to resolve them. Although we continue to disagree with some of its preliminary conclusions, we have maintained a constructive relationship with the Commission to ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of our customers in Europe and support the more than 225,000 small and medium-sized European businesses that sell in our stores."
