At least three people have died and more than 30 have been rescued in the English Channel after an incident suffered by a small boat near the English county of Kent (southeast England), the British Government confirmed on Wednesday.

The small boat in which between 30 and 50 migrants were traveling, according to information revealed by members of the rescue operations to local media, experienced difficulties when crossing the channel and capsized early this morning.

According to the BBC, 43 people were saved, of which more than 30 were rescued directly from the canal's waters.

The event sparked a large search and rescue operation, in which the British coastguard, the United Kingdom Navy, the border force, and the Kent County Police participated, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Ships from the English towns of Dungeness, Hastings, and Ramsgate, and two coastguard service helicopters have also visited the canal waters.

"I am aware of the harrowing incident that occurred this morning in the English Channel and am constantly kept up to date as the agencies respond and urgently establish all the facts," Home Secretary Suella Braverman said in a tweet.

The event occurs only one day after the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced on Tuesday in the House of Commons (Lower) a new plan to stop illegal migration to this country, with new measures in force with which it is intended to reduce the number of illegal arrivals by sea.
