Eight police officers and a civilian have been injured when a car bomb exploded as a van of riot police officers passed by on the highway between the cities of Diyarbakir and Mardin, in southeastern Turkey.

A vehicle parked on the side of the road detonated around 05:10 local time, according to the Diyarbakir governor's office, as reported by the official Anadolu agency.

After the attack, numerous police patrols and ambulances were sent to the area, and the nine injured were taken to a hospital by emergency teams.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced that two people have been arrested in connection with this attack, but did not specify their identity or whether they belong to a terrorist group.

Diyarbakir is one of the cities with a Kurdish population in Turkey and an area where attacks against security forces by the Kurdistan Workers' Party guerrillas, considered terrorists by Turkey, the European Union, and the United States, are frequent.
