They find 82 migrants crammed into a cargo truck in Mexico
A total of 82 migrants, including some minors, of various nationalities, were found crowded inside a cargo truck that had been abandoned on a highway in the state of Chiapas, in southeastern Mexico, federal authorities reported Wednesday.
In a joint statement, the National Guard and the National Institute of Migration (INM) indicated that in coordination with agents of the Mexican Army they found the vehicle where they found the migrants.
The report explained that during prevention and security patrols on the Chiapa de Corzo-San Cristóbal free highway, in the state of Chiapas, the agents detected a transport vehicle on a road that appeared to have a mechanical problem, since "it was with open chest.
The agents arrived at the place where the cargo vehicle was stopped to help the driver; however, this was not located.
The authorities indicated that when carrying out an inspection they realized that inside the dry box, there were people locked up and in an overcrowded condition and that after that, the agents released 82 foreign migrants.
Of various nationalities
The agents explained that when interviewing several of them, they stated that they were foreigners, of different nationalities, and before them, INM personnel were notified to transfer them to the office of the INM Control and Verification Directorate, in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Chiapas.
The corresponding steps were then taken to provide consular assistance to the migrants, define their legal situation and, where appropriate, proceed with their assisted return.
The cargo truck was made available to the delegation of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) in Chiapas, to continue the corresponding investigations.
The Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (Interior) of Mexico indicates that in its records from January to August of this year it intercepted 250,000 migrants, mainly from Central American nations, and from Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela.
