The world's largest volcano, Mauna Loa, erupts in Hawaii

The Mauna Loa volcano, located on the island of Hawaii, has erupted for the first time since April 1984. It is the largest volcano in the world in terms of its area of 5,271 km2, a maximum width of 120 km2, and volume of the earth.

After remaining 'asleep' for almost forty years, the geological structure once again puts the island on alert, since its large dimensions cover half of it.

As reported by the British news agency Reuters, the lava flows are contained within the summit area and do not threaten communities located on the hillside.

However, as the Hawaii Volcano Observatory has published, the winds can carry volcanic gas and fine ash. As such, residents at risk from lava flows should prepare and consult Hawaii County Civil Defense information for further guidance.

1984 eruption

Based on the latest eruption, which did not cause fatalities but did destroy several villages, it can be understood that the early stages of a Mauna Loa eruption can be very dynamic and the location and progress of lava flows can change rapidly.

Therefore, if the eruption continues, it is most likely that the Lavan flows will be confined within the caldera walls. However, if the vents migrate out of their walls, the lava can move rapidly downhill.

To avoid grievances from the consequences this natural phenomenon may cause, the Hawaii Volcano Observatory is in consultation with emergency management partners and will be monitoring the volcano closely in the coming hours to provide further updates on activity.
