The African-American Democrat Karen Bass makes history: she will be the first woman in charge of the mayoralty of Los Angeles

A democratic federal representative for California Karen Bass won the mayoralty of Los Angeles, according to US media projections released this Wednesday, and makes history by becoming the first woman to assume the reins of the second largest city in the United States.

Bass, 69, defeated businessman Rick Caruso, who invested more than $100 million of his own fortune in his mayoral bid, breaking local spending records and injecting unprecedented amounts into advertising, according to data from the Los Angeles newspaper. Times.

Caruso, a former Republican turned Democrat, held a slim lead in early vote counts but ultimately couldn't beat Bass, who will become the second African-American to lead this city of about 3.9 million, according to Census data.

Born in South Los Angeles, Bass had represented California's 47th District, which covers part of the city, in the US Congress for nearly ten years.

For his part, Caruso, with a net worth of 4.3 billion dollars according to Forbes, went from being an independent candidate to registering last January for the Democratic Party. Three years ago the billionaire was part of the Republican Party.

Bass will assume his position on December 12 when he becomes the 43rd person to hold the position in Los Angeles' 241-year history.

He will succeed Eric Garcetti, the second Latino to serve on the Los Angeles City Council after Antonio Villaraigosa made history in 2005 by being elected the city's first Hispanic mayor.
