Legislative elections in the US 2022: When will the results of the votes be known?

This Tuesday, November 8, 2022, the United States legislative elections will take place when it is decided who will control the two bodies that makeup Congress: the House of Representatives and the Senate.

In these votes, the majority of the states are clear about who their candidate will be, so the focus of attention is focused on a few states in which the battle is closest between Republicans and Democrats. These states are Nevada, Georgia, Ohio, Arizona, and Pennsylvania.

These states are important when it comes to determining the outcome of legislative elections, results that are announced in very different ways, since voting is not centralized, each state controls the counting of its votes and its procedure is different.

Each state communicates the results at one hour

In fact, in previous elections, it has been necessary to wait until one or several days after the celebration to finally know the winner of the votes. In addition, the results of the less competitive states are usually known before those in which the votes are more close.

An example of this can be found in the 2020 presidential elections, when the final results of the state of Georgia, where the presidential winner was established, did not arrive until more than two weeks later, which gave rise to rumors that the elections had been rigged, as reported in The New York Times.

However, legislative elections do not usually take as long as presidential ones, since voter turnout is lower and there will be fewer mail-in votes due to the end of Covid restrictions, votes that usually take longer to count.

Therefore, although the results of the elections begin to be known by some states as of 6:00 p.m. (local time), there will be others that are not known until after midnight or even the day after the vote.
