Elon Musk scraps telecommuting for Twitter staff, tells them to prepare 'for tough times ahead'

Elon Musk has eliminated telecommuting for Twitter employees. He has also warned staff in his first email as the owner of the company that they needed to prepare "for tough times ahead." In the email, he also explained that "there was no way to sweeten" the economic outlook. The new policies will take effect immediately, the Daily Mail reported.

This is the latest warning to his new staff just days after the billionaire laid off almost half of the company's global workforce of some 7,500 people. In addition, the elimination of telecommuting comes after Twitter established a previous agreement with employees where they were allowed to work from anywhere.

Musk has also removed the extra monthly rest day from staff calendars, a right the workforce had acquired during the pandemic.

Another of the measures taken by Musk that are causing talk these days has been his idea of forcing verified users with the blue tick to pay eight dollars a month as if they were paying for a subscription. In fact, in the email sent to employees, he said that he wants the social network to get half of its income from subscriptions.

It also stated in another email that it is working to find and suspend any verified bots, trolls, and spam in the coming days.

At the same time that he announced the end of teleworking, he also said that he eliminated the "official" gray label because he considers that it was "another way of creating a two-class system." The badge was awarded to high-profile accounts, such as heads of state, media outlets, and celebrities, but Twitter's new owner "killed it" within hours of taking over the company.

Regarding this fact, he said that in addition to being "an aesthetic nightmare", this light gray emblem did not address the fact that "there are too many entities that are considered official or have some kind of legacy blue check marks," he said during a meeting.

Therefore, "if someone tries to impersonate a brand, that account will be suspended and we will keep your eight dollars," Musk concluded.
