At least seven people died this Tuesday in a new shooting that occurred at a Walmart supermarket in Chesapeake (Virginia, United States), according to local media reports.

The perpetrator of the massacre was found dead in the store and, although the exact number of victims is unknown, a police spokesman, Leo Kosinski, indicated that it is below ten. Kosinski also acknowledged that the suspect acted alone. Chesapeake police have been able to confirm up to seven deaths so far, including the shooter.

For its part, the Walmart chain said it was "shocked by this tragic event" and that it was "working closely with law enforcement."

The Police were alerted to the events at 22:12 local time on Tuesday when the Walmart supermarket was still open.

Forty emergency vehicles traveled to the place, where a huge police operation was also deployed.

Authorities are asking those who were in the area and family members of people who may have been at the supermarket at the time to go to the local convention center.

Chesapeake, in southeastern Virginia, is a city of about 250,000 people and is part of the Virginia Beach and Norfolk metropolitan areas.
