Who are the 300,000 Russian reservists who could be mobilized after Putin's announcement
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that he will carry out a partial mobilization of the population to "defend its territory" while accusing the West of wanting to destroy the country. As the Russian president has advanced during his speech, the measures related to said partial mobilization would begin this Wednesday and he has stressed that only reservists, mainly those with experience, will be called up.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has stressed that nearly 300,000 reservists will be called up as part of the mobilization. "We have enormous mobilization resources among those who have already served in the Army, who have combat experience and military specialties. We have almost 25 million of them. It can be understood that this mobilization is partial," he explained, as collected by the Russian news agency TASS.
After Putin's announcement, the flights to leave the country from Moscow to other places such as Dubai or Istanbul have been sold out for the next few days, due to the demand that skyrocketed in a matter of minutes. Likewise, social networks have been filled with guidelines to avoid the recruitment announced by Putin or to be able to leave Russia.
How reservists will be chosen
But, who would be part of this group of reservists? On the one hand, Andrei Gurulev, a member of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, has pointed out that "usually, the mobilization affects reservists under 50 years of age for health reasons", as reported by the Interfax agency.
Therefore, people over this age will not be called for mobilization, nor will university students over 18 years of age and all those who are studying professional training.
Likewise, only reservists who have completed compulsory military service and who have combat and military experience will be called up. The chairman of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, Andréi Kartapolov, has detailed that initially soldiers up to 35 years of age who meet these criteria and non-commissioned officers up to 45 years of age will be called.
