Russia executes its threat and closes the gas tap to Europe for "a leak" that does not need cuts

The Russian gas consortium Gazprom has executed this Saturday the announcement of the day before that it will suspend until further notice the transit of gas to Europe through the Nord Stream gas pipeline, according to data from the infrastructure management company.

In this way, Gazprom, which controls the gas pipeline that connects Russia with Germany under the Baltic Sea, has fulfilled its announcement this Friday that it will completely cut off gas transit through the Nord Stream due to an oil leak found in a turbine during maintenance work on a compressor unit, the only one still in operation.

The Russian gas company had promised before stopping the gas pipeline for three days for these tasks to resume supply to Europe this Saturday at 4:00 Moscow time (2:00 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) at previous levels, that is, at 20% of its capacity or 33 million cubic meters per day, something that it has not done alleging that the oil leak does not guarantee safe exploitation.

At the same time, he assured, the complete elimination of oil leaks in the turbines "is only possible" in a specialized workshop referring to the German supplier Siemens.

The German company, however, has stressed that there are no technical reasons to stop the gas pipeline, since normally this type of leak does not affect the operation of a turbine and can be sealed in situ as part of a routine process.

Nor does the European Union (EU) believe the reason for the gas cut, calling it a "fallacy".
