Eight climbers die when they climbed a volcano on the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka
Eight climbers died while climbing the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's the Far East during bad weather, according to regional government deputy chairman Roman Vasilevsky, Sputnik reported Monday.
A group of 10 climbers with two guides sent out a plea for help on Saturday as they climbed the highest mountain in Siberia and the highest active volcano in Eurasia, the Russian media added.
Initial reports indicated that five people died after falling off a cliff and that one climber was injured and left unconscious. One of the guides broke his leg, according to the journalistic source.
This Sunday morning, the head of the regional government told Sputnik that another person had died, bringing the death toll to six.
However, already at night, it was reported that two more people died, the agency added.
The regional emergency service of the Kamchatka Territory reported on Sunday that a helicopter with rescuers could not land on the Klyuchevskoy volcano due to hurricane-force winds and that two attempts were made several hours apart, but both failed, according to Sputnik.
He added that this Monday a helicopter from the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry will again try to take rescuers to the highest possible height, where they will begin the ascent on foot.
Another rescue group of 24 people ascends to a height of 1,200 meters, where they plan to establish a base camp to provide assistance to the members of the rescue team who make the ascent and to the wounded, according to the Russian media.
