At least two killed in a suicide attack near the Russian embassy in Kabul
At least two people died and eleven others were injured on Monday in an alleged suicide attack near the Russian embassy in Kabul, which occurred when the attacker detonated the explosives he was carrying in the vicinity of the compound.
The event took place this morning on Darul Aman avenue, in the southwest of the capital "in front of the Russian embassy, when the suicide bomber tried to attack the embassy's security chief" near the visitor area, said the police chief of the area, Malavi Saber.
The suicide bomber blew himself up in the street upon being spotted by authorities "before he reached his target, killing two civilians and injuring eleven others," Saber said.
"Among the dead is an Afghan worker from the Russian Embassy and a civilian," he said, while a member of the Taliban security forces is among the eleven wounded.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported for its part to the Interfax agency that the suicide attack occurred "very close to the consular department" and "killed two embassy employees", while there were also casualties among Afghan civilians.
At the moment no armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group is usually behind these attacks, becoming the main threat since the return of the Taliban to power a year ago.
One of the few countries with service in the country
Russia was one of the first and few countries to defend rapprochement with the Taliban, despite not having the recognition of the international community.
Although Moscow has also not made its recognition of the fundamentalist regime official, it is one of the few nations that maintains an active diplomatic service in Afghanistan.
The country's security has become a challenge for the Taliban, who since coming to power have seen Afghanistan suffer some of the bloodiest attacks in recent years.
Last August at least 21 people were killed and thirty were also injured in a suicide attack on a mosque in the Afghan capital.
