The AMIA attack, the US sanctions... A plane blocked in Argentina generates a diplomatic entanglement with Iran and Venezuela

Since June 6, Argentina has been involved in a diplomatic entanglement with Iran. Two months ago, a plane with a Venezuelan flag originating from Mexico landed with an Iranian crew in the Buenos Aires town of Ezeiza, daily action for the Emtrasur transport company. Instead, the takeoff two days later to Uruguay was denied and he returned to the Ezeiza airport. That is where the problems between the two countries began.

As a result of the refusal, deputies opposed the Government's requested reports in relation to what happened. For its part, the Executive analyzed the cargo and the conclusion was 14 Venezuelans and five Iranians who were part of the crew and were held in a hotel. In addition, the plane could not take off due to a lack of fuel.

The cargo Boeing 747 Dreamliner of the Embrasur company, which is blocked at the Argentine airport, has been flying as a Venezuelan for a short time for the last 15 years it has operated in the Mahan Air company. Likewise, the United States has sanctioned the company and has warned that any foreign company that provides logistical assistance will be punished. Thus, both the oil company YPF and Shell have refused to provide fuel to the plane.

In addition, the Iranian-Venezuelan plane landed in Argentina without problem since they did not find anything out of the regulations neither in the cargo nor in the crew list. But after analysis, last Monday, June 13, the Argentine Interior Minister, Aníbal Fernández, reported that he had received information about the relationship of the crew with the Quds Forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Here the problem began. The US labels this group a terrorist and Argentina accuses them of the worst attack in the country recorded in 1994. In addition, in the latter, the headquarters of the Jewish mutual in Buenos Aires exploded due to a car bomb that left 85 dead.

Specifically, Argentina has set its sights on Gholamreza Ghasemi Abbas since his name coincides with that of a member of the terrorist group. In mid-June, an Argentine judge ordered the withholding of the passports of the Iranian crew members, who have full freedom of movement.

They must be released unconditionally
For its part, the Iranian government stated on Monday that Argentina must allow the five Iranians who were part of the crew to leave its territory. "They must be released unconditionally," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said on Monday. "They have not committed any crime," he remarked.

The diplomat has communicated that the Iranian embassies in Buenos Aires and Caracas continue to negotiate the departure of their five citizens, whose passports were withdrawn by the Argentine justice system and are not allowed to leave the South American country. "Unfortunately there has been no progress," the Iranian official said.

For his part, the Argentine federal judge, Federico Villena, has rejected the request of the lawyers Gabriel Palmeiro and Maximiliano Rusconi to represent the Maduro government and the Emtrasur company, according to the American CNN. The Venezuelan Government asked the Argentine Justice not to seize the cargo Boeing 747.

Thus, the request details that the plane "would represent an arbitrary interference in the public patrimony of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and in the rights that concern its sovereignty."
