The Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, confirmed this Wednesday that the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, will intervene in the summit of NATO leaders at the end of June in Madrid, although he has not revealed whether he will attend in person or participate by videoconference.
"He will be invited to the Madrid summit to address all the leaders. He is welcome to attend in person, and if it is not possible he will do so via videoconference," Stoltenberg said, at a press conference from the headquarters of the NATO before the meeting of defense ministers this Wednesday and Thursday.
If he went to Madrid, it would be the first time that the Ukrainian president has traveled abroad since the invasion of Russian troops ordered on February 24 by Vladimir Putin.
In this sense, the former Norwegian prime minister recalled that Zelensky already participated in the last summit of Euro-Atlantic leaders when he intervened telematically in the extraordinary meeting organized a few weeks after the Russian aggression.
Stoltenberg wanted to reiterate support for Kyiv, noting that the leaders are "extremely committed" to Ukraine and that they will show their solidarity with deeds "and not just words."
Allied sources confirm plans to facilitate Zelensky's presence in Madrid, which they would see as an important act of public diplomacy and a powerful image of NATO in Moscow. In any case, they recall that the decision to travel to Madrid corresponds to the Ukrainian president and they point out that he will make it at the last moment, depending on the situation in the country.
