An attack perpetrated by terrorist groups aboard vehicles and motorcycles in the Tillabéri region, in western Niger, has left at least fifty terrorists and eight gendarmes dead.

As reported on Wednesday by the Ministry of Defense in a statement broadcast by the government television "Tété Sahel", the attack occurred this Tuesday at 5:30 in the morning in the town of Warren, in the town of Téra.

The attack also caused 33 injuries, six of which were serious, among the Gendarmerie troops stationed in the area to guarantee the safety of the towns in the region.

The National Gendarmerie detachment is on a mission to "secure the adjacent villages" of the town of Warren when it was attacked by terrorist groups "aboard many dozens of motorcycles and vehicles."

"The energetic reaction of the elements of the detachment with the ground and air reinforcement, both national and from the partners, allowed to defeat the enemy," the note reads.

Authorities are looking for those responsible.

The assailants also destroyed five Toyota vehicles and a truck, the same source explained, adding that "some fifty" terrorists were killed in the attack and "many wounded were carried by the enemy during their retreat."

The note indicated that many tracking operations are underway in the area to locate the terrorist groups that carried out the attack.

This new deadly terrorist attack against this military position in Waraou occurs in less than a week after the recent visit of the Nigerien president, Mohamed Bazoum, to the area, specifically in the Téra areas to morally support the people who fled their villages. because of the terrorist threat.

Bazoum also went to Torodi to meet with internally displaced persons and promised to restore peace and security in the area, while asking the terrorists to lay down their weapons if they want to benefit from the mercy of the state.

This attack also occurred at a time when the country has just recently acquired armed drones and other military equipment from Turkey to better fight these terrorist groups that have been disturbing peace and stability in the Sahel since 2012.
