Increasingly, science is showing that there is a very close relationship between psychological and physiological states. Thus, it is not surprising that complaints of either of these two natures also cause symptoms of the other.
In the same way, there are techniques that operate on either of these two aspects that can be used to alleviate problems with the other. One of the clearest examples is the various forms of breath control that have a great effect on manifestations of a psychological nature.
What does it consist of?
The alternate breathing technique proposed by the occupational therapist and specialist in cognitive stimulation Catalina Hoffmann is based on this principle, whose objective is to reduce states of anguish and anxiety.
As explained in the book Neurofitness, there is a brain structure, the amygdala, which acts as "the engine of our emotions". Normally, it would be in charge of associating an emotional component to the information perceived by the senses; however, in certain cases, it can "connect directly" to the cerebral cortex. This is what is known as "tonsillar sequestration" since in this way the amygdala prevents the information from passing through its usual circuit.
Thus, he argues, this alternate breathing strategy achieves "that the amygdala lowers its activity by balancing the cerebral hemispheres."
How is it done?
To carry out this technique correctly, we must find a quiet and comfortable place where we can sit on the floor in a position that is easy to maintain for a while.
Next, we must collect the index and middle fingers on the palm of the hand, so that the thumb, ring finger, and little finger are extended.
Using the first one, we will cover the right nostril and inhale using only the left one. Then, we will uncover the right nostril, we will cover the left one with the ring finger, and will exhale that air with the right one.
The process is repeated by changing the order of the nostrils (inhaling with the right, exhaling with the left) and these two variations are alternated for five or ten minutes.
