A mission from the Democracy Observatory of the Mercosur Parliament (ODPM) will accompany the presidential elections in Colombia, which will take place next Sunday, to guarantee "the transparency of the said process," as reported on Wednesday.
According to the statement sent by the Parliament of the Common Market of the South (Parlasur), the ODPM will have "the objective of accompanying and monitoring the electoral process to contribute to the transparency of the said process."
Parliamentarians Oscar Laborde and María Luisa Storani, from Argentina, Humberto Costa, from Brazil, Pedro Dulciades, from Paraguay, Mario Colman, Daniel Peña and Nicolás Viera, from Uruguay, and Jaime Rivas, from Bolivia, will integrate said working group, according to the information provided by Parlasur.
Quick voting system
From this Wednesday, the parliamentarians plan to carry out their activities in Bogotá, where they will meet days with political and civil society organizations, the candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidency, as well as State agencies involved in the electoral process.
The Observatory will present a preliminary report, in which "it will present considerations about its observations," according to the statement, in addition to "recommendations with the aim of helping Colombian electoral bodies with measures to improve the next electoral processes."
The ODPM recalls that it has already followed the legislative and presidential elections held in Colombia in 2018, in the process of which the observers verified that "the voting system in the country is usually very fast", so it is expected that the first results will be known on the same election night.
Gustavo Petro possible leader
This Sunday, more than 39 million people are called to vote in Colombia to elect the successor to the current president, Iván Duque, for the period 2022-2026.
However, it is most likely that it will not be resolved on this day and the two most voted candidates will dispute a second round on June 19.
The latest survey by the firm Invamer for Blu Radio, Noticias Caracol, and El Espectador places Gustavo Petro (left) as the leader, with 40.6% support, followed by Federico Gutiérrez, from the right-wing coalition Equipo por Colombia (27 .1%), and the populist Rodolfo Hernández, from the Anti-Corruption Governors League (20.9%).
